Childcare & Early Years

This should lead to a very rewarding career in a nursery or pre-school environment.

You need to enjoy teaching young children to develop social and practical skills in preparation for school.

The Study Programme training usually starts at Level 2 in the first year progressing to Level 3 thereafter. These higher qualifications can either still be within the Study Programme or else within an employed Apprenticeship.

At that stage you’ll be in demand by local nurseries that value highly qualified, energetic  and committed staff.

The Level 2 qualification is a Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce awarded by NCFE.  This is a substantial qualification that is the minimum requirement for a childcare career in a nursery.

The Level 3 qualification is a Diploma for the Children’s Workforce (Early Years Educator) and usually delivered within an apprenticeship standard. Outstanding nurseries expect all their nursery practitioners to be at, or working towards, this level of qualification.

A Level 1 Caring for Children qualification can be offered, but this is subject to uptake each academic year.

The Level 1 qualification is an introduction to the practical skills and knowledge you need in caring for children. You will work towards a BTEC Diploma in Caring for Children, which is delivered through a mixture of classroom based learning and work placement.
